The titular story of Kaori Yuki's 1993 collection understands this underbelly of folklore, giving us a frightening, twisted variant of "Hansel and Gretel." Framed (both literally and literarily) by a storyteller's voice, "Cruel Fairy Tales" begins with a brother and sister playing with a music box that portrays a legend similar to "The Wife of Bath's Tale." When it breaks, one statuette remains unscathed, and the brother promises to rebuild the box for his sister.
