Newsman’s widow puts a face to silent killer
PITTSBURGH — Today, Melanie Bloom and her three daughters will say happy birthday to David Bloom, hold hands and sing a song at the grave of the late NBC-TV correspondent.
On Saturday morning, his widow will speak at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh about DVT — deep-vein thrombosis — an insidious, silent killer that took her husband’s life on April 5, 2003, while he was on assignment in the early days of the Iraq War.
A blood clot formed deep in the vein of Bloom’s leg, broke loose and traveled to his lung, creating a pulmonary embolism, or PE, that blocked an artery that carried blood from his heart.
He was 39 years old.
Their twin daughters, Nicole and Christine, were 9, and their youngest, Ava, was 3.
